## Why Socrates

Understanding is more valuable than an answer on demand. AI can make it easy to move on too soon. We believe its better role is to create room for reflection, practice, and stronger questions.

## Our commitments

A considered tool for a considered life. The measure of a learning product is not how long it keeps you scrolling. It is whether you leave with more agency over what you know and how you know it.

1. **Questions over performance** — We design for intellectual honesty: it should be safe to begin with an incomplete thought.
2. **Context over novelty** — A useful tutor remembers the path into a question instead of treating every prompt as an isolated event.
3. **Practice over consumption** — Understanding grows through retrieval, explanation, and revision.
4. **Clarity over spectacle** — We make deliberate choices about tone, pacing, and interface so the ideas have room to breathe.
5. **Care with confidence** — When the tutor is uncertain, it says so plainly.
6. **Your thinking, your data** — Conversations are private. We do not train on them. Export or delete every session from the account page.

## How it began

Socrates started as a small notebook experiment between two people who taught mathematics and computer science at different universities. We wanted a tutor that could stay with a student for the difficult second week — the period when the early enthusiasm fades and the real work begins.

- **2024** — First prototype. An internal tool for our own students.
- **Early 2025** — Quiet opening. An invite-only beta with a few hundred learners and teachers.
- **Late 2025** — Public launch. Socrates opened as a free and paid tutor for everyone.
- **2026** — Studio & recall. The learning paths and recall queue joined the tutor.

## Who builds it

A small team that has taught for a living. The team behind Socrates has taught at universities, written textbooks, graded a lot of late homework, and watched many students get stuck in the same place.

## How we work
